Rejuvenate
after Redundancy
You can turn a negative experience into a positive one and use redundancy as a chance to re-evaluate your life and career path. Whilst initially it can be a shock and stressful, people often find new and better opportunities come their way as a result.
Val Wade Recruitment has over 20 years’ experience recruiting temporary, contract and permanent office support staff in London. We work with many people who have been made redundant, finding them both temporary assignments and permanent or contract roles, as well as offering practical advice, for example, on how to make the best of your CV and improving your interview techniques.
We have put together some general points for you to consider after redundancy:
Get your CV up-to-date
Think about what you want – do you want to stay in the same area of work? Or, do you want to change to a new career?
Either way, you’ll need to have your CV up-to-date. It may be some time since you’ve looked at it so you need to ensure that it is relevant, current and interesting.

Chose your Recruitment Agencies
It’s a good idea to register with several agencies to start with – they may be ones with vacancies which interest you or they may have been recommended by a friend.
Make sure you look at their websites regularly for new vacancies and stay in touch with your consultant. Be positive and focused about what you want, but do keep an open mind.
Temping
Undertaking temporary work is a great way to meet new people and work for companies in different industries while you are looking for a permanent role. You may enjoy it so much you decide to become a career temp. Sometimes jobs are on a temp to perm basis so temping can be a good way of trying out the role to see if it suits you.
Val Wade Recruitment has a very busy temporary division with varied and interesting assignments from some great companies across London. If you would like to temp, discuss this with your consultant.
Networking
Networking is an important part of our daily lives and can be extremely useful when looking for a new job. You can network with friends and family (and people they both know), people you’ve met at the gym, tennis club, Salsa class etc, colleagues and ex-colleagues, together with suppliers or other contacts you’ve met through work and use networking websites eg LinkedIn.
If you’re networking to find your next role, make sure you have your objectives clear in your mind and can discuss what you are looking for in a clear and positive way.
Training
If you are looking to improve your existing skills this is a good time to do so. We can offer training on all Microsoft Office packages which can be done online at home, in your own time and it’s free! If you want to test your keyboard skills Val Wade Recruitment also offers online testing. Ask your consultant for details. Similarly if you are looking to learn new skills, now is an ideal opportunity. Make sure you research what skills are required if you are planning to switch career.
You Time
In between your job searching, do ensure that you take some time out for yourself. You may choose to spend some time with your family, travel, get in touch with old friends, take up jogging, re-design your garden or go to a pottery class…the list is endless. It’s just important to do something you’ll enjoy.
Financial Advice
If you are worried about your finances after redundancy you can contact the Citizens Advice Bureau, see their website for further information. http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/
Be Persistent
If your job search doesn’t deliver immediate results don’t be disheartened – be patient, persistent and persevere! Finding a new job can take time so don’t worry if it takes you a little longer than you hoped. Pace yourself so that each week you have some objectives eg calling your recruitment agencies, searching for jobs on the internet or networking. Don’t put things off.
Don’t take the first job that comes along if it’s not what you want – there will be others. Decide what salary you are prepared to accept in advance and don’t feel pressured into taking a much lower salary. You will find the right role at the right salary for you!
